I don’t know what your house is like in the morning, but in mine, things can be pretty crazy. On days when Andrew & I are both headed to work and Levi is off to the sitter, things never go according to plan.
No matter how hard we work on a routine, it seems like a wrench always gets thrown in. You know what I’m talking about – don’t you? Someone can’t find something, someone else is throwing a tantrum, and mornings turn into chaos.
That’s why when I started reading Vanessa Myers’ “Breakfast With Jesus” devotional, I was an admitted skeptic.
Really? Kids doing devotions in the morning? Like that would work.
As I started to read through Vanessa’s devotional though, I started to change my mind. My wheels started turning as I asked myself – “How would mornings look different in our house if we started the day with Jesus?”
Now don’t get me wrong – there are lots of quick prayers whispered, an occasional worship song playing as we get ready, and sometimes deep theological discussions brought on by the early morning musings of my 2.5 year old. But an intentional, thoughtful routine that starts the day with Jesus? It hasn’t been present.
If you’re in the same boat as me, Vanessa’s devotional is an amazing tool to allow you and your family to start that routine.
Breakfast with Jesus is a devotional book designed for elementary-age kids to start off their day! In her introduction, Vanessa challenges kids to take 5-10 minutes in the morning to sit down and “hang out with Jesus.”
How? By walking through the Gospels and encountering Jesus in each of these 100 devotions. This book does an amazing job of pointing kids to Scripture, unpacking the stories of the Gospels, and making it relevant to kids’ lives – in simple, digestible bites.
I love the “Follow Me” activities at the end of each devotional that provide real-life opportunities for kids to put into practice what they’ve learned during their day! Another huge bonus is the breakfast recipes throughout the book – I am dying to try the “Bagel Dip” and some of the other yummy recipes Vanessa shares.
I really believe this book will provide a way for you and your family to start the day off with Jesus. Your kids can literally do these devotions while they eat their breakfast before school! It’s a great way to introduce a devotional routine in the morning.
While this book is a little advanced for my family’s stage of life, it has still challenged me to find ways we can have “breakfast with Jesus” too. With the chaos of adding a new addition, I’m not making any big plans – but I am looking for some straightforward and simple ways we can start to intentionally focus on Jesus as we start our day!
