Jesus is Big Enough to Handle My Doubts!: A FREEBIE from Conquering Fear

When I wrote Conquering Fear in 2018 & 2019, I never could have imagined how scary our world would become. With the Coronavirus pandemic rapidly unfolding, we live in very uncertain, and scary times.

I have no doubt our kids feel it too. While they may not know all the details, they sure know that something is going on! They may be feeling scared, overwhelmed, or asking a lot of questions about where God is in all of this.

With that in mind, I’m sharing one of MY favourite parts of Conquering Fear with you! It’s a great way for you and your kids to get into the Bible, have a hard conversation, AND pass some of the many hours you have together. Here you go!

“Jesus is Big Enough to Handle My Doubts!”

Bible Verse: “Jesus said to Thomas: “Don’t be faithless any longer! Believe!” (John 20:27)

Read: Thomas couldn’t believe what his friends were telling him! They claimed that Jesus—the one they had seen killed a few days before —was alive again. More than that, they said he had showed up when they were meeting together. Even though Thomas wanted to believe them, it sounded too good
to be true.

Jesus couldn’t really be alive, could he? He had seen what happened on the cross. How could this be possible? Thomas finally told his friends, “Unless I see him and touch him, I won’t believe you!” A week later, Thomas could hardly believe it when Jesus showed up at a meeting with his friends! The doors were all locked, but Jesus was somehow there! Jesus stood in the middle of them and reached out to Thomas!

“Thomas, you can touch me! You can see me! Stop doubting—I’m alive!” Thomas was overwhelmed. Jesus was really alive! More than that, Jesus loved him enough to show up and put his doubts to rest. He knew that he could always trust Jesus.

Prayer Prompt: Thank God that no matter what questions and doubts you have, he loves you and shows up!

Activity: Invisible Ink Message

Sometimes, we doubt God because we can’t see him or what he’s doing in our lives! Thankfully, even when we can’t see him, we can know he’s working. Try out this cool invisible ink activity to remind yourself that even when we can’t see what God is doing, he’s still at work.

Materials
• 1 lemon, cut in half
• water
• spoon
• small bowl
• cotton swab
• white paper
• lamp

Directions
1. Squeeze both halves of your lemon into the bowl.
2. Add 2 or 3 drops of water to the lemon juice, and mix with a spoon.
3. Dip the cotton swab into the mixture.
4. Write your message on the paper.
5. Hold your paper up to the light. After a little bit your message will
show up on the paper!

Activity: Interview with a Jesus-Follower

One of the ways that we can deal with doubt is by talking to someone else who has doubted! Write down three questions that you’d like to ask someone else who follows Jesus! Write down their answers on a piece of paper.
